Traditional Irish Music in Seattle comes to a Crossroads

Finn Mac Ginty Finale
For the last two decades or so Seattle has enjoyed a vibrant Irish cultural scene. Traditional music has played a big part - the music of a small community of top-notch performers, operating mostly under the radar. Starting in the 1970’s at Jake O’Shaughnessy’s in lower Queen Anne and in the 80’s at Murphy’s in Wallingford, the “trad” scene has thrived in its adopted home. Until now, in changing times, one of its leading exponents, Finn Mac Ginty, is departing Seattle to return to his native Ireland.
Cast up on the shores of Puget Sound in 1989, after a spell in Japan, Finn very quickly rose to prominence, joining the most misspelled band in the Northwest, “The Suffering Gaels”. He’s partaken of many Irish Week proclamation lunches, St. Patrick’s Day Dashes, KIRO TV appearances, and other celebratory Irishness; he’s played for Charlie Royer, Ted Kennedy, and the ! odd republican (John Spellman).

But things change…….Finn - singer, guitar-player, actor and performer par excellence, is moving on to greener pastures (40% greener according to the European Union). He’s off to the old country

In his own words:

“I am heading home to Ireland. There are a lot of endings going on as we wind down our time here. Last visit to the San Juan’s....last pint at Conor Byrnes’……… last gig with Crumac ………… last Magners at Molly Maguire’s.”

“Shortly after arriving in Seattle in 1989 I heard Dale Russ play at the session in the original Murphy’s in Wallingford....next thing I knew I'm playing guitar with The Suffering Gaels. My first gig was a live Folklife concert broadcast on KUOW. The Suffering Gaels begat The Gaels (after Conor Byrne's departure for Ireland), with a side trip through Setanta with Dale and Hanz Araki; and for the past couple of years we've been Crumac "Creegan, Russ and Mac Ginty!”

”Now it's all coming to an end as I follow the string I've always had connecting me to Ireland.”

Please join Finn and his band Crumac for a last concert bash at The Tractor.
